Hobbies

When I am not in school, studying, or tutoring, I enjoy rock climbing, art, hiking, fishing, traveling, and music. I wholeheartedly believe that tutoring, and learning in general, is most effective when fundamental concepts are emphasized. Therefore I spend a good amount of time with my students evaluating and improving fundamental skills which will allow them to move forward. In practice, this means reviewing previous material (i.e. quizzes, homework, and exams) to identify reoccurring problems and misunderstandings. I have three main goals for the students I tutor: 1) to strengthen their understanding of fundamental concepts 2) to improve organizational and study skills such that the capacity for learning improves not only in the sciences, but in all realms of academic study 3) to make the subject matter relevant and interesting I have found that the last goal is especially important in the sciences. I believe that creativity and the ability to think "outside the box" are no less important than the memorization skills necessary to excel in science and math in particular. As an artist myself, I have seen the benefits of an approach to learning which involves the development of both logical and creative abilities. I want my students to improve and excel in both these regards.
