Experience

I have worked as a tutor both professionally and on a volunteer basis. I recently completed a year of full-time work for City Year (a nonprofit education program to get high school kids on track to graduate) as a tutor and teacher assistant in Algebra I intensive for struggling students. I also worked part time as a tutor for the Hunter College of Nursing in NYC, where I led small groups of students in freshman science courses, as well as for Varsity Tutors. I have worked with several families privately, including elementary, middle, and high school aged students. I also worked for KIPP middle school charter school as a math tutor for children in 4th through 6th grades. I have tutored independently and through the school district in ACT and SAT. I have experience tutoring LSU students in college level math and science through the Student Support Services program. As a volunteer tutor in college, I have worked with high school students in both math and science. I have also tutored adults, including traditional aged college students and older adults returning back to school. I enjoy helping others to learn and achieve their goals. I have taken (and received an A or B) in general chemistry and biology (for science majors), physics, honors organic chemistry, honors calculus I, calculus II, microbiology, genetics, human anatomy, human physiology, vertebrate physiology, biochemistry, environmental chemistry, and evolution. With my philosophy minor, I have gained valuable experience in argumentation and writing, and will be able to assist students in improving literature analysis and composition skills. I have taken the SAT, ACT and GRE and scored above the 90th percentile on all tests. I can help make these tests less intimidating through various methods and test taking strategies.

Hobbies

I am currently a certified physician assistant working in the psychiatry emergency department at a large county hospital, with an extensive background in tutoring and education. I enjoy tutoring students part time, as I have a passion for education in addition to medicine! I was a full time volunteer with the City Year program, which addresses issues with high drop out rates, while helping improve students' community involvement, confidence, and learning. My tutoring style is very patient and caring. I understand that students come from diverse backgrounds and that gaps in fundamental knowledge may hold students back. I have worked with students from diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds and am very respectful of cultural differences and preferences. I am a friendly and outgoing person, who enjoys cooking, swimming, music, and getting to know new people! I am comfortable tutoring in many areas, including elementary through high school subjects, and many college and graduate subjects. I am available for standardized test preparation (SAT, ACT, GRE), as well as for writing help with college or graduate school admissions essays.
